Does anybody know the best glue to reattach the arm on a broken soapstone carving?

Date:
12 Jan 2000

Comments

5 Minute epoxy does a very good job with stone and ceramics. Because soapstone is porous, you should coat both pieces with the mixed epoxy and wipe off all of the excess liquid before it sets.
After the epoxy hardens (10 minutes or so) re-coat one piece and wait until the slightest thickening of the epoxy can be discerned, ( about 2 minutes) then quickly join the parts and hold them together until the epoxy is set. Keep in mind that 5 minute epoxy can set in as little as 2 minutes if mixed in large puddles, or if exposed to temperatures above 90º. Immediately after the joint sets (while it is still soft) cut away excess epoxy with a razor blade.

Test before gluing by wetting the soapstone with water. If your carving changes color or brightens when wet, the glued joint will show. You may be able to mix a small amount of oil paint, (artist colors or model paint) and touch up the joint to make it less noticeable. Sand the joint smooth with a very fine grit sandpaper before painting and use a fine pointed artists brush.

I was enchanted by John Glover and his Marblehead Marines on "The Crossing" on A&E last week. After some research I found a letter dated Feb. 25, 1999, identifying the only John Glover biography as one now out of print by George Athan Billias entitled "General John Glover and his Marblehead Marines", published in the 1960's. Does anyone know of any biographies of John Glover currently in print and where I might find them?

I have a sword that has Edward Harris Carson's name engraved on it and it is in excellent condition. It has the Ames Company name on it. It has a world globe and then a crown on the top of the handle. At the bottom of the handle there is a crown with a sword and looks like a hook sword. On the blade of the sword it has The Henderson Ames Co. Kalamazoo Mich. and in the middle of the blade it has Edward Harris Carson engraved on it. I was wondering if you could tell me about what year it was made and if it is worth anything. It's case has the word paxautbellum on the crest on the outside. Thank You.

I have an antique dentist chair in excellent condition here in Los Angeles. I've had it for years, but it's just not practical to have in my life anymore and I'm looking to sell it. I thought I'd try here, as it deserves to find a good, appreciative home. I'm not sure of it's year, but I'd roughly estimate it's from the forties. As I say, it's in great shape. Anyone interested can contact me by phone at (310) 246-1201 or by email at jdrouillard@earthlink.net - Thanks, John Drouillard

Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was established in 1880 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The factory began as a metalworks which first made fittings for coffins. Near the Pairpoint factory was the Mt. Washington Glassworks which made fine glassware, and the two companies began exploring synergies culminating in a merger in 1894. From the late 1890s until the 1930s, lamps and lamp accessories were an important part of Pairpoint's production. Scenic shades were sometimes artist signed. Most shades were stamped on the lower inside or outside edge with either 1) The Pairpoint Corp., 2) Patent Pending, 3) Patented July 9, 1907, or 4) Patent Applied For. Bases were made of bronze, copper, brass, silver, or wood, and are always signed.
Due to financial difficulties, the company reorganized in 1939 under the direction of Robert Gundersen and again specialized in quality hand-blown glass-ware. Isaac Babbit regained possession of the silver departments, and together they established Gundersen Glassworks, Inc. Following the end of WWII, it became necessary to reorganize yet again.
The Gundersen-Pairpoint Glassworks was formed, and the old line of cut, engraved artware was reintroduced. The company moved to East Wareham, Massachusetts in 1957. Business continued to be poor, and the firm closed early in 1958. In 1970, Robert Bryden, sales manager for the company since the 1950s, reestablished Pairpoint and new facilities were constructed in Sagamore. In 1974, the company began to produce lead glass cup plates which were made on commission as fund-raisers for various churches and organizations. These are signed with a
'P' in a diamond and are becoming quite collectible.

I inherited my grandmother's china and would like to find the pattern name. It has the Noritake backstamp that was registered in Japan in 1933 on the back, the letter "M" encircled in a wreath with the words "Noritake China" above and "Japan" below. The bottom of the wreath has a bow and the area around the letter "M" is blue. The china has a gold rim and pattern with flowers and something that looks like a medallion alternating with the flowers. I have bought a couple of old wooden folding chairs. They seem very old to me, about 1940s or even a bit earlier. Is there a market for old folding chair antiques? There is no makers name or company trademark on them to identify the manufacturer. I believe they are made out of oak, and are in near perfect condition. I can get my hands on eight more of them, but I need to know something about them in a hurry. Can someone fill me in or point me to a website that has informantion about antique folding chairs? Why I need to know in a hurry is because the other eight are about to go to a landfill!!!

I have purchased a limoge (small Porcelain box with top) and I am trying to get some information on it. Their is a painting on the top of a King in Bed with the Queen on the side of the bed seeming to be comforting him. The painting is very detailed. The Kings armour is hanging behind him Sheild, sword, helmet, breastplate, a guard is outside of a door in the background. The limoge looks very old and the painting looks to me as if you would have had to live in that error to paint the shield. It is not like any shield I have ever seen.Their is gold rim around painting which has studs protruding on onside of this ring seems to be a sculptured Lion protruding. Painters Name Is Walter P???? it has a symbol on the bottom of limoge. also a symbol under top side of limoge. I Will try to describe symbol it looks kinda like a large letter U with three horizontal lines through it with a dot under each line half way through. Top side mark looks like the cursive small letter Z with dot after

I am trying to find out information on 2 chairs I have. I estimate that they are about 75 years old, could be older. They are walnut wood frame, oval backs, very short legs (sit low to the floor) and small, undefined arms that connect the back to the seat. The upholstery is both on the front and the back of the back of the chair. The oval back wood frame has only a small swirl accent on the left and right sides of the top arch.

Can you tell me the name, age, and worth of such a chair?

Thanks, L

French pen & ink drawings -- I have 2 of these. They are pen and ink but have been painted with water colors over the top of the ink. One is entitled "Gilquin imp Paris" and is signed by Isabelle Desgranges. It features 2 ladies in fancy Victorian dresses. The other is entitled "Leroy imp Paris" and is signed by Anais Couvouz. It also features 2 ladies in fancy Victorian dresses. If it weren't for the different signatures, I would think these two pieces were by the same artist. What exactly are these, and are they likely to be worth anything? What is the actual name of the technique where one paints in water color over a pen & ink drawing? If you have any insights, please respond here or to brakewood@compuserv.com. Thanks. By the way, they are for sale!

I have a very old barber chair and I don't know the brand name, year or value. I have looked around on the web and their seems to be two major brands: Kochs and Koken, but I cannot find those names on the chair. The footrest is imprinted with Beardsley Manufacturing Co. Chicago (I cannot find the company) and there is a sticker under the seat with Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry #8964. I have not attempted to look under the base. The chair needs some upholstering and porcelain chips fixed, but someone wants to buy it and I don't know how much to sell it for. Hi,

Would you please direct me or my email to someone who might be able to advise me about where and/or how I can get an old family blanket restored? It was my grandmother's, and was made in Portugal probably about a hundred years ago (I think; if I remember the story correctly). It has a thread design; it's hard to describe; but it's not quilted or anything like that... It just has a square design pattern made of millions of thread stitches... Some of the threads have worn out, and there's some sun damage. It weighs a ton.

Thanks for any advice or help you can provide.

HELP! PLEASE?

I have just obtained a "China" tea set that has the hand written name Handgemalt with some sort of an X above it, with another unusual mark beneath it with the #10. In the middle of the bottom of the dishes is another seemingly "factory" mark that is green with an S in the middle of a "house" design sitting on the word SCHOENAU. The design of the China is a very light powder blue that gradients to white in the center. Around the middle of the edge there are 3 groups of flowers of red blue and green (one large at the top and two smaller ones to the lower left and right consisting of red and blue flowers). It has Gold Scallops around the edge of the dishes. Any information would be greatly appreciated as this was given to us as an Anniversary Present. It was said to have come from Germany by way of England and supposed to be antique. Again thank you for your help and assistance... curity2@tds.net God bless you.

Dear AntiqueAdvertiser.com,

I am looking for an antique cherry rocker similar to one my grandfather had in western Pennsylvania. The feature I'm having difficulty in finding is that the back of his rocker was mostly flat solid wood, not slats or dowels. The back was about six to eight inches wide at the seat, then gradually got wider towards the top, then it kind of mushroomed out to the full width of the chair, and connected to turned dowels at each corner. The seat was solid wood. The solid back was carved with some sort of floral design. Any idea what this style is or where I can find such a thing? I hope my description was adequate because I have no pictures. I could maybe mail you a sketch.
