I have an African Elephant made from Soapstone, my son brought this home from Kenya for me. Unfortunately, in transit the ears have become detached, but both breaks are clean breaks. Before attempting to repair the damage, is there any particular method of doing repair work like this? Is there any particular glue to be used? This Elephant is quite substantial in size and weight (22 pounds) and I would like to make sure the job is done properly. Thank you for taking the time to read this plea for help. May I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year.

Regards,
Brian Lafferty

RE: Soapstone Elephant

5 Minute epoxy does a very good job with stone and ceramics. Because soapstone is porous, you should thinly coat both pieces with the mixed epoxy and wipe off all of the excess liquid before it sets.
After the epoxy hardens (10 minutes or so) re-coat one piece and wait until the slightest thickening of the epoxy can be discerned, ( about 2 minutes) then quickly join the parts and hold them together until the epoxy is set. Keep in mind that 5 minute epoxy can set in as little as 2 minutes if mixed in large puddles, or if exposed to temperatures above 90º. Immediately after the joint sets (while it is still soft) cut away excess epoxy with a razor blade.

Test before gluing by wetting the soapstone with water. If your carving changes color or brightens when wet, the glued joint will show. You may be able to mix a small amount of oil paint, (artist colors or model paint) and touch up the joint to make it less noticeable. Sand the joint smooth with a very fine grit sandpaper before painting and use a fine pointed artists brush.

I have several pieces of Franciscan Ware: plates, saucers, cups, etc. I want to know the "design" name. The pieces are in various pastel colors, maroon, peach, green, yellow. The only design features are a swirl effect on dish edges and a soft-feeling texture of the finish. I believe the design is of the 1940s, but, all the 1940s Franciscan Ware I can identify on the net is described as having unusual (take it to mean "weird" or "remarkably ugly") designs. Thanks for help. Blinkie.

On marble, any kind of acid removes the shine. Oxalic acid is used by pro's in conjunction with putty to re-polish marble. Used alone it DISSOLVES the surface. Vinegar is used to clean non-shiny marble. Please do everyone a favor and remove the acids advice. The best care for stone of any kind is keep it clean and buff it up. Use a mild detergent, then rinse well and buff. Beeswax is fine if you like sticky yellow marble. Carnauba wax over clean stone is best. You can bleach yellowed statuary with liquid bleach, since it is not acid. You may have to leave the bleach and water mix in for several days. OK! Jan the Marble Expert

I have a beautiful, silver pedestal bowl with grapevines and grapes around the rim. There is a stamp underneath, up inside the pedestal which reads from top to bottom: 1881 ROGERS QUADRUPLE NEW YORK 5231. Also on both sides of the word ROGERS there are wreathes with the letter R inside. I would like any and all history on this bowl that anyone could tell me. Also, I am not able to get the black off of the exterior of the bowl. It is VERY tarnished. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to shine this piece up? Or should I just leave it black?

I also have a silver goblet with a very simple swirling engraving that has been hand hammered on the outside rim going all the way around. There are also two stamps on the outside next to the top of the rim. The stamp on the left is a rectangle with an arrow pointing to the right. Inside this stamp, it reads (to the best of my ability to see it): 5710. The second stamp on the right is an oval with flattened ends. Inside this stamp (from left to right) there is a lower case r. To the right of that is a five pointed star with a hammer and sickle inside the star and to the right of that are the numbers 875. The first stamp measures 21/2 cm wide and 1cm high. The second stamp measures 3cm wide and 1/12 cm high. Does anyone have any history on this goblet and how old it could be? I am assuming it is Russian because of the hammer and sickle in the star and I am assuming the "875" refers to the silver. Also what does the 5710 signify?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Mrs. C. Guglielmi. TheGuglielmiFamily@peoplepc.com

I would very much appreciate an assessment of worth of 2 vases: One is a Roseville vase in the Gardenia pattern. It is predominantly green and about 10 inches tall. It has small handles near its top. Condition is excellent--no chips or cracks.

The other is a Van Briggle vase in Ming Turquoise. It has a "corseted" appearance, with a "waistline". It is 6-1/2 inches tall and 3/4 inches at its widest point. Three 3-petaled flowers are near the top and lily-like leaves swirl up ward on this graceful looking piece. It has the double A symbol in a rectangle engraved on the bottom along with colo.s and the words van briggle.

We were given a small vase which measures 7 1/2 inches high, 2 1/4 inches deep and 4 inches wide. It has an Arab type desert scene painted on it with gold accents. The two handles are covered in either gold paint or leafing as well as the bottom. It is a very unusual shape, and on the bottom it has the following markings:

Hand Painted * Nippon. In the center is a M with a strand of sheet on each side on the M, and this marking/stamp appears in green. There are no other distinguishing marks on the vase.

I have been unable to find out anything on the internet about this mark/stamp or about the worth (if any) of the vase. Any help you could provide me would be greatly appreciated

I just purchased a buffet that seems to have active worms. The reason I can make this statement is that I saw holes and sprayed with insect spray. This morning I found sawdust where nothing seemed to be going on the day before. Help! Will my piece of furniture fall apart? Should I contact the seller?

Thanks,Amanda

Amanda,

If you need piece of mind in order to enjoy the buffet you should either return it or have an exterminator "fog" it. Fogging is a procedure that is done under a plastic tent which is placed over the piece. A potent fog of insect killer is introduced under the tent and left for a day or two. All wildlife will thus be terminated.

HI. I have this pretty vase that has an iridescent gold tone to it and very thin glass. It's about 15 inches tall and wider at the top. If anybody can tell me about this I would really like to know, also I have a bowel that is irregular around with green and gold inside and white outside. The edges look folded in, maybe it was meant to be a gravy bowl it's obviously very old and it's very heavy. Can someone identify it and tell me about it ? Shellbel201@aol.com

I just bought a set of Johann Haviland Bavaria Germany dinner set and I know little about the set. It is missing a several pieces if I want it to be for 12. The tea cup saucer has a #5 red mark on back, pink roses dipping into saucer, set of two then one and the pattern continues. There is a tanish garland design surrounding the edges of the saucer and it is trimmed in silver. Can anyone tell me the name of the pattern? I can supply a picture. Thanks Hellmann1@home.com

I have a signed and stamped dining set from the early 50's by Craddock Furniture of Evansville, Indiana. In addition to a vague signature and the Craddock Logo, the bottom has "95 CRAD BLACK" stamped on it, possibly the pattern. The table can seat 12 easily, but the set only came with 6 chairs. They are similar to the Duncan Phyfe roseback style, except that instead of roses, some sort of tree leaves?, perhaps a palm tree, with fruit (or coconuts) are deeply carved into the top, and there is an open smile-shaped section under the "fruit" to define their shapes. Does ANYONE know anything about this company or how I can get more chairs? I would like to complete the set with this chair, rather than using the DF rose ones. Please email me at laura@asheboro.com if you know anything. Thanks in advance.

I have an 1847 Rogers Brothers complete silver set. It is in the original wood box. The box is scratched, but the silver set is complete and mint. There are a few papers inside it. One tells of the silver, one gives the number of the packer and the other is a slip to order the cleaner. These are all in mint condition. The set is "eternally yours". My mother received it as a wedding gift, so I'm assuming it is from the late 1950's. Do you know anything more about this set? Any idea how much it is worth.

Thank you for your time, Maria

I have a 1847 Rogers Bros. what looks to be like a silver and glass butter dish. The glass dish part has handles at each end that look like toes round bubbles of glass descending in size. The top in silver with three flowers at the base of the handle in each side. They fit together like they are a set but I am not sure. We have been given a Reed and Barton ice water pitcher with a porcelain lining (also engraved by Reed and Barton "Reed and Barton's patent moveable ice pitcher linings"). It has been neglected but with a little elbow grease, we have already begun to see the beauty of the Silver. The silver pitcher has intricate designs and a removable lid which screws to the pitcher with two silver screws. The bottom of the pitcher is engraved to say "Reed and Barton Plated by Reed and Barton Patented August 4, 18__ May 18, 1878" It is then stamped with the number 134 on the bottom. Hand etched on the bottom of the pitcher as well as the removable top is the number "146". Any information regarding the age, value, history would be greatly appreciated. It has been in our family as long as anyone can remember. The pitcher stands approximately 14 inches in height.

Hello,

I have recently come into possession of some silver serving pieces. I have been told they originally came from Berchesgarden, but have no real proof of this.

The seals/stamps on the pieces certainly seem to originate from Germany/Austria/Bavaria. The seals consist of a woman set in front of mountains with five little crowns at the bottom. Also stamped on the pieces are the words "Gebr Hepp 90."

Does anyone have an idea of what this means or the origin of the pieces? If you could help me or direct me to an appropriate information source or website I would be greatly appreciative.

Thanking you in advance for your help.
