I've just come across a tea set which has the impressed mark "H & Co" on the bottom. On top of the mark is a crown. I've searched and searched, but can't find any similar mark in any books that I've come across. There are lots of crown marks, and a few "H & Co." marks, but none that combine the two. Any suggestions? ahawton@rep.scdsb.on.ca I have pictures of the tea set, if that'd help.

Hello,

Your web page looks very useful, so I was hoping you could possibly give me some advice. I've recently inherited several pieces of wooden furniture which previously had been stored in a house with no heating for about three years. With that in mind, I currently have all of the furniture in rooms with the heating also turned off, to keep the temperature and humidity approximately what it was, and plan to gradually bring the conditions to what they will be for the finished pieces (turning the heating up gradually, etc.) However, I am slightly concerned as many of the pieces have a musty smell inside the drawers/cabinets, and I'm wondering what the best method for removing this would be. as at the moment it rather makes many of the pieces unusable. Is this something which will fade as the pieces are brought up to a more normal house temperature, or do I need to take any sort of special action? There doesn't appear to be any kind of serious mildew or mold on any of the pieces.

Kris

Kris,

That smell is of biological activity on the surface and within the grain of the wood. The only way to permanently stop it is to wash (IMPORTANT: use a paintbrush, rubber gloves, and eye protection) with a very diluted (follow the instructions on the label) bleach/water solution. Repeat as necessary and follow up with a lemon oil treatment to replace the wood's natural oils.

I just read the article about NOT refinishing antique furniture. Please excuse me for not being very informed, but I have a few questions for you. First of all, I will tell you the short story of why I am asking questions. My girlfriend and her father decided to refinish a rocking chair that I do not know the age. It had a dark finish on that we began to strip. Unfortunately the task was very difficult even with using stripper. There is still a good amount of finish on it. My question is, is there a better way to strip it now? Also, was it worth stripping? It is over 25 years old, but that is about all that I know. I just know that it was made before I was born. I could use your feedback. Thanks, Ryan Wantz

Date:

Comments

Ryan,

Most folks call anything more than 20 years old antiques although true antiques have to be at least 100 years old. The article refers only to true antiques. Your 25 year old rocker isn't really antique, it's just used furniture so go ahead and strip it. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do the job so keep on using the stripper and lots of patient scraping. Make sure that you use eye protection and gloves.

It must have been rather portable, as small. Wondering if anyone could find info. or how to find it, as interested. Thank you,

My name is Terry Fletcher. I am a silver smith. I worked for Kirk-Stieff for 28 years until they were purchased by Lennox Corporation. Lennox subsequently closed the factory down. I worked for Lennox shortly thereafter until they fell on hard times. They sent me over sees to Malaysia several times but I could not continue the travel. I now have my own shop in Baltimore, Maryland and can be reached at 410 663-1500. I do silver repair and manufacture. I also do pewter work, but the expense is so great it is usually not worthwhile for a customer to have pewter repaired. Anyone having damaged or old silver they want to get rid of can call me, I may be able to help them out. Terry

For sale, serious enquiries only: early 1900s Koken salesman's sample barber chair. Porcelain base, black leather seat, armrests, footrest, and back. Leather is intact and undamaged. Headrest is covered with a black fabric, and shows some wear. Armrest ends are dark wood. All metal is in good shape with a few chips here and there. Porcelain is in perfect condition, with no chips or other damage. Reclining mechanism works, and I believe the pump does also, but since there is no oil in it, I am unable to verify that. This beautiful and rare piece was givin to my grandmother by another relative down the line who worked as a barber supply salesman, so it has been in my family since it was new. If you follow Butterfields or any of the other big auction houses, you know what these pieces, when available, have sold for. I have digital photos available for Email to seriously interested buyers, and I also have a few 35mm photo packets available to send out. This item has a fair market value of between $12,000 and $20,000 dollars, and identical pieces have sold for as much as $40,000. I will entertain serious offers only. My name is James Spicer, and I can be reached by Email at Procop606@brightok.net or by phone at (580) 369-5311.

I need to contact the William A. Rogers silver company about my silverplate. I purchased it awhile ago and kept it in a dry drawer in the case. I decided to bring it out and use it. It has been 3 weeks and it is in terrible shape. The silverware is pitting and after washing it develops a white film on some of the pieces. We are older, so it hasn't been abused. We don't know what is wrong and I can't find an address for the company. Can anyone help? Reply to Suzeq4@webtv.net Thank you very much for any information.

The Ferguson Brothers Manufacturing Company made furniture in Hoboken, NJ from 1898 - 1953. They were family owned until being bought in 1953 by Sun-Glo Industries. At this time the company was moved west to Virginia. I have a table made by this company with markings stating No. 2772 made by FBM Co in Hoboken, NJ. This information was provided by Hoboken Local Library. Hope this helps.

I have two statues, 19" tall, one is a bearded fisherman holding a sack over his shoulder, knee high boots, winter coat on, with a basket of fish next to his left leg. The other statue is a female, with a hat that has the ties hanging down to her shoulders. She is holding a platter of fish on her right hip, over her left shoulder she has draped a long shawl or fish net, she is bare footed, has a long sleeved blouse on with three buttons. Both statues seems to have a tree stump in back of them. The oval emblem on these statues says: (IN THE OVAL AT TOP) MARVAL (BOTTOM OF OVAL) IND.INC, in the center of the oval is a "C" in a circle. I would appreciate any information on these statues. Thank you, Marie MMETHENY@ICEWEB.NET

Hi, I have an antique Mug that was given to my grandparents from an antique shop owner many many years ago. I know nothing about this Mug and was hoping that maybe someone reading this might. It's a small mug, maybe 2 1/2 - 3 inches high. It has a picture of 2 little boys, dressed as horseracing jockeys and they are riding rocking horses. There is a phrase around the picture that says " A Close Finish " There is a picture of the sky in the background. On the Bottom of the mug, it is stamped in the middle "Germany" and right under that is the number 233. Not sure what any of it means, just guessing that the number might be part of a set. If anyone has any information they can give me, please write me at XxXxLittleExXxX@aol.com It would be greatly appreciated! Thx

can someone help me identify the manufacture in Germany that used a pyrmid with what appears to be a crown inside of it. this symbol is on a earthenware jar like piece.... the mouth is about three inches across and the jar is about three inces tall... it depicts three scenes..first is two gents with the bavarian hats and feathers looking on in profile position and the second is one of the gents standing behind what seems to be a bar maid squeezing her left breast... the third picture is the other gent in like position.. all depictions are raised and very colorful with a glazed finish..the inside of the jar is also glazed.....the background for the pictures is a very deep cobalt blue... the top rim of the jar has a metal ring pressed on it..... the bottom is inscribed with made in germany and the pyrmid with a crown in side.... i can only say as for the dat that it was brought back from germany 1939 and kept my my grandfather for all this time. thanks for reading any messages can be sent to gfritsch@cinergy.com

I have what a slant front desk that has three drawers; two 7" and the other 5". It stands about 38" high and is 29" wide. Opening the desk top reveals five equally sized square slots above three shorter, but wider slots. The middle slot has a small drawer. The desk has four ball and claw feet. The claws are two in number for each leg. The ball and claw design is only on the front of each leg. The sides follow the outline of the design, but is not destinguishable as a ball and claw. The back of the leg is smoth. There are no readable marks on it. It appears to have been refinished by someone who simply tried to restain over the original finish. It is structurally sound. I bought it for $15.00 at a yard sale. I do not know anything about collecting antiques. I simply buy what appeals to me and enjoy making something ugly pretty again. I enjoy working with wood furniture, but am definitely a green horn. I plan on re-finishing this desk. I would like to know what this desk might be and where I might find more information about it. Also, any tips on how tips on how to re-finish the desk would be very welcomed. Respectfully, Pete prjb@prodigy.net

They also say "Dekor Fein silber" which I translate as decorated with fine silver (makes sense). In addition to manufacturing info, I'm trying to find out how to care for them --- they are tarnished. I have a rocking chair that was purchased at a flea market and it was made by the Karpen furniture in Chicago. I know think that they have since went out of business. I am wondering if there is anyway to date the chair, it seems to be much older as the stuffing in the chair was horse hair or something similar. Any help I can receive would be great.I can be reached at hanley1990@attbi.com

I accidently spilled Clorox bleach on four pieces of my sterling silver flatware. Tarnish-looking spots appeared which I've tried everything to remove--toothpaste, baking soda, traditional silver polish, lemon. Nothing works. I'm heartbroken. The silver was a wedding gift 25 years ago. It's English ribbed rat tail pattern. And absolutely beautiful. I use it every day. Can you give me any suggestions for the stain removal? Thank you. I have a dinnerware set and I can't figure out who the maker is??!!! can anyone help??? it consists of 26 pieces, 8 plates, 8 soup plates, 8 salad plates, gravy boat attached to the saucer underneath, a vegetable bowl, 3 small oval platters, I medium size platter and 1 large platter. I am not sure if any pieces are missing...??? the color overall is cream with dark pink/light pink/white roses with yellow and blue daisies and some green sprigs of something surrounding the rose. this pattern continues around each piece at the top as well as a light blue scrolling type of design with yellow accents. there is a thin gold line followed by a thick bluish/purple line followed by another gold line of medium width all around the top edge of each piece. the edges of the porcelain are in a scroll type pattern also. on the bottom of each piece is a gold crown with a cross on top, exactly like the of crown derby porcelain, but without the swords, and the word handgemalt. on 3 different pieces though, the crown and the word are in a bluish/purple color, and it looks like it is over the gold color. also, I finally found another mark on the square round vegetable bowl...the #'s 34.R830 are imprinted on the bottom with no color except of the porcelain itself (cream) my grandma purchased this in Germany, and was told that the factory closed in 1935. that is all the information that I have...please help me if you have any related info, I would greatly appreciate it!!! thank you...Tara

I have a beautiful Bavaria dinnerware set I recently bought at an estate sale. I have been searching the internet for information on it and have come up with little information. What I have come up with is the pattern number and the description of it. The set is in perfect condition, having no cracks, chips or nicks. On the bottom of each item contains: Crown Heiden Bavaria in green print with the crown logo and a number as it relates to each item. The pattern number is: CWH7 by Crown Heiden (CWHCWH7) Description: pink/gray flowers, rim, gold trim and the edges are scalloped. I believed to be a complete set containing: 12 dinner plates, 12 salad bowls, 12 teacups and 12 saucers, 12 desert plates?(smaller than the dinner plates), 12 icecream bowls?(smaller than the salad bowls), 3 oblong platters-each smaller than the previous, 1 gravy boat, 1 teapot with cover. What I am looking for is; the history of these items, where it was produced and by who, the years they may have been manufactured, and how much it possibly is worth. lconway_37@hotmail.com

I am not sure what the wood is, but there is a very distinct pattern on the front almost as if it was burned a little. There is a shipping tag on the back of each from Joerns Brothers Furniture in Stevens Point, WI to Chicago. I recently inherited a set of china and would like to know more about it. The markings (manufacturer stamps)is in German and we think it's as follows: First line - Lamag Second line - an image of a crown over an evergreen tree Third line - Wtgchonwalb Fourth line - Bavaria Since I don't speak or read German I'm not confident in my interpretation so I might be off by a few letters. Any information you might have would be extremely appreciated. ejmj313@aol.com Thank you Maria Kemper

I'm looking for pieces of china manufactured by Pfiefer & Lowenstein. The china has a rose pattern with a dark red border trimmed in gold. The manufacturers mark includes P&L (although it looks like PSL) and a crown and also the word ALMA which may be either a city name or a pattern name. The china was made in Bavaria prior to World War II although some of the pieces (notably teacups) are marked Austria. The set dates from the late 1920s or early 30s. Any information please email degoldmn@open.org. Thanks for any help.

I purchased an old dining room set from an antique auction about five years ago and I am trying to find some information on it. There is a really old shipping label nailed to the bottom of the table with no date on it. It has the makers name of Sweat Comings Company, fine furniture, and it was shipped to M.H. Dain, Gouveneur, N.Y. There is a table, with double legs in the middle with spindeled legs and ornate. The six chairs have a harp design on the backs with the same legs on front and straight legs on the back. The sideboard is waist heigth, about five feet long with two drawers in the middle and a cupboard on each side. The chine cabinet is the same design, sits about two feet off the floor and has one door with a thin board cut out design matching the chairs. The company was located in Richford, VT. The furniture was shipped to the auction house in a crate from N.Y. I also have a setting for ten silverware from State House Sterling (Home Decorator's, Inc. Newark, New York State. It comes with a $1,000.00 Warranty Bond with the buys name and dated 1930. It comes with many different sizes of spoons and forks plus serving pieces. Each is wrapped in it's own purple cloth and marked as to what they are.The registry # is 8721 and the pattern is called Inaugural, and the owner was Norma Smith, Buffalo, N.Y. President of the Co. is E.E.Severson. snglover@msn.com

I'm looking for a piece of Eschenbach China, Roswitha is the pattern. I am in need of a 7" salad plate. Anyone having one that they are interested in selling please let me know. sugrfoot@nauticom.net

To the party that entered comment on September 3, 2002 regarding Eschenbach China, Roswitha pattern. My father purchased a set of this china pattern for my mother when he was serving in Germany during WWII. My research to date would indicated that Roswitha is the pattern name. The china is ivory in color with a black band and gold leaf design around the edge. There is also a basket weave design in the china that is approx 1" wide. Some of my pieces are marked US Zone and others are not. Someone else entered a comment on June 4, 2002 asking the same question. They received a reply on July 2, 2002 that indicated that the china was made after the end of WWII while US troops still occupied part of Germany. From what my dad has told me, this sounds correct. Dad returned home from Europe in December 1945. Ths china order did not arrive here until October 1951! I am currently looking to replace a 7" salad plate in this pattern. If you have one and would be interested in selling it please contact me. Hope this helps!

Help! I've acquired several lovely Limoges pieces in an estate sale and need to identify the pattern. They are Guerin-Pouyat Elite works with the red Elite Works SM with the little guy's head. Another green mark is very similar. It has a similar crest with sm, guy's head, with the full word "Limoges" above it and the word "ELITE" all caps stamped OVER the Limoges part. Under the crest it says France. The pattern on the dishes is pink full-blown single roses with green leaves, interspersed with a gold, black, and green swag-looking thing with a pink daisy-shaped flower in the middle of two gold feather looking things. There are 5 swag things and 10 roses on the small bowl. The edge is gold gilt. From the edge, the pattern goes: gold gilt rim, a circle of gold u-shaped doodads, then the pale green ring, then the swags and roses. No center design, just plain ivory porcelain. Any info you have would be much appreciated! Thanks.

We purchased some pieces of Le Mieux china at an auction and have been unable to find out very much about it. It is marked "Le Mieux China Hand Decorated" in a circle under a crown. In the center of the circle it says "24 karat gold". It is gold with a filigree pattern, green bank, with a round inset on each piece of a man and woman in 18th/19th century clothing. The pieces we bought include a large rectantular tray with a handle on each end, six small cups (saw them on e-bay as egg cups, but I'm not sure that is what they are), a decanter, a candy dish, and other piece that resembles the others, but is not marked and the filigree is different. We are curious about history, value, etc. Any info would be appreciated. Our e-mail address is oihus2481@msn.com

The pitcher is also attached by two pins to the arch so you do not have to pick it up to pour, just tilt it. In front of the pitcher is a coblet also sitting on the platform. The whole piece appears to be silver or pewter. The marking on it are PAIRPOINT MF & CO, New Bedform Mass., quardruple 1847 1/2. there is a triangle with a P in the middle. Hey everyone, I am working on a project for 4-H, and it is refinishing a chair. I am 13 and have never worked on refinishing chairs before. It is just a western style desk type chair, and I want to put a western cushion on it. It has straps on it to hold the cushion under neath. They are like the straps that hold down loads on semi trucks. It has a back with 3 horizontal bars and has round arms and lags with carved edges. i have already sanded off the finish with 100 grit paper, but know what do I do?? I only have 2 weeks, please help!!

You can buy a can of wood stain (oil stain is best for beginners) and follow the directions on the can. Stain will help make the chair a uniform color. When the stain is dry brush on a clear finish. Two coats of varnish or polyurethane is good, three coats is better. Always read and follow the d
